Product Description
THE BARTENDER’S BOOK
Rich and robust, Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum is crafted with Caribbean rum aged in double-charred blackened oak barrels. Deep notes of clove, cassia bark, molasses, and vanilla blend with a bold, smoky finish. Bottled at 94.6 proof, it delivers an intense, full-bodied character ideal for sipping or bold cocktails.
TASTING NOTES
Taste is more than flavor. It is the full conversation between glass, nose, mouth, and memory. Here, we break each spirit into four parts:
AROMA
Vanilla, molasses, dark caramel, black cherry, brown sugar, licorice, cinnamon, clove, and charred oak.
PALATE
Dark molasses, caramel, vanilla, black cherry, cola spice, cinnamon, clove, brown sugar, and toasted oak.
FINISH
Medium to long, warm, sweet, and spice-heavy, with lingering molasses, vanilla, cherry, oak char, and peppery heat.
Â
TEXTURE
Fuller and heavier than Captain Morgan Original Spiced, with more syrupy weight, more proof, and more dark-rum grip.
Â
Captain Morgan Black Spiced delivers a darker, stronger spiced-rum profile built around molasses, vanilla, caramel, black cherry, brown sugar, cinnamon, clove, licorice, and charred oak. It has more body and bite than Original Spiced, but it still remains a commercial flavored rum rather than a dry, traditional aged-rum study.
STRAIGHT TALK
Captain Morgan Black Spiced is one of the more convincing Captain Morgan bottles because the higher proof and darker flavor profile give it real presence. The molasses, black cherry, caramel, vanilla, and spice all show clearly. The limitation is finesse. It is sweet, heavily flavored, and not especially subtle. It works best when judged as bold black spiced rum, not as a serious aged rum.
THE MIX
For culinary-pairing context, Captain Morgan Black Spiced works with dark chocolate, black cherry, cola spice, molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, coffee, charred orange, grilled pineapple, roasted banana, barbecue glaze, jerk seasoning, smoked salt, and roasted pork.
The Jazz Chef angle: this is Captain Morgan with the lights down and the amplifier hotter, molasses, vanilla, black cherry, caramel, spice, and charred oak pushing harder than the standard bottle.
A DISTILLER’S TALE
Captain Morgan is a Diageo-owned brand named after Henry Morgan, the seventeenth-century Welsh privateer. Black Spiced belongs to the brand’s darker, bolder spiced-rum lane. It uses the Captain Morgan flavor logic, spice, sweetness, and Caribbean rum identity, but pushes it toward blackstrap-style molasses, deeper color, higher proof, and heavier spice. The product is positioned as fuller-bodied and more intense than the standard spiced expression.
MY TAKE
Captain Morgan Black Spiced is one of the stronger entries in the Captain Morgan lineup. Molasses, black cherry, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, clove, and charred oak give it more authority than Original Spiced. It is still sweet and commercial, but the higher proof and darker profile give it better structure. Judged as black spiced rum, it earns the bump.
