THE BARTENDER’S BOOK

Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 is a single-batch, limited-edition cognac expertly crafted by Master Blender Renaud Fillioux de Gironde and bottled at 43 % ABV. This fifth release combines eaux‑de‑vie from 18 exclusive distiller families, resulting in a deep amber spirit bursting with spice and candied orange on the nose. The palate is layered and indulgent, offering pastry-like notes of cocoa and sweet spices, followed by tobacco, candied orange, and strong fruit tones, all carried by a rich, creamy texture  . Critics praise its bold complexity, “bold, toasty, and layered with darker, duskier notes…cherry cola, raspberry, coffee and black tea…festive”, and enthusiasts on Reddit call it a “very good value…complex…easily worth the asking price” . No. 5 stands as the richest and most complex in its series, a collectible, sippable cognac that blends craftsmanship, depth, and elegance in a singular, unrepeatable expression.

TASTING NOTES

Taste is more than flavor. It is the full conversation between glass, nose, mouth, and memory. Here, we break each spirit into four parts:

AROMA

Candied orange, sweet spice, cocoa, polished oak, tobacco, pastry cream, dried fruit, and warm Cognac richness.

PALATE

Cocoa, sweet baking spice, creamy pastry notes, candied orange, tobacco, strong fruit, vanilla, and oak warmth.

FINISH

Long, warm, textured, and spice-led, with lingering orange peel, cocoa, tobacco, vanilla, dried fruit, and polished wood.

TEXTURE

Rounded, creamy, and structured, with more weight and spice than Hennessy VSOP, but less heavy oak than Hennessy XO.

Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 delivers a rich Cognac profile built around candied orange, cocoa, pastry cream, sweet spice, tobacco, vanilla, dried fruit, and polished oak. It is fuller and more complex than the standard Hennessy shelf, with orange and spice leading rather than the softer apple-and-vanilla profile found in some younger expressions.

STRAIGHT TALK

Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 is more interesting than standard luxury-label Cognac because it has a specific creative purpose. The 18-distiller selection gives the bottle a real story, and the flavor profile is distinct: orange, cocoa, spice, tobacco, and creamy pastry notes. The caution is price and availability. Limited Hennessy releases often carry collector energy, so part of the cost is scarcity and label prestige. The liquid is strong enough to deserve attention, but it should not be treated as magic simply because it is limited.

THE MIX

For culinary-pairing context, Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 works with candied orange, dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, fig, raisin, dried cherry, toasted almond, hazelnut, crème brûlée, bread pudding, chocolate tart, orange cake, aged cheese, and roasted nuts.

The Jazz Chef angle: this is Cognac with orange peel, cocoa, tobacco, and spice in the horn section, warmer, darker, and more arranged than the regular Hennessy standards.

A DISTILLER’S TALE

The Master Blender’s Selection series gives Hennessy’s master blender more freedom than the house’s permanent expressions. For No. 5, Renaud Fillioux de Gironde selected eaux-de-vie from 18 exclusive family-run distillers as a tribute to the behind-the-scenes artisans who supply Hennessy. Hennessy describes the wines as double-distilled on the lees, then blended to reveal balance and complementarity across the selected eaux-de-vie. The series is designed around one-time blends, so No. 5 is not intended to become a permanently reproduced formula.

MY TAKE

Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 has more personality than the standard Hennessy ladder. Candied orange, cocoa, pastry spice, tobacco, dried fruit, vanilla, and polished oak give it a clear signature. It is not the best value in Cognac, because the limited-release premium is real. Still, the bottle has enough structure, flavor, and maker intent to earn respect.
