PURPOSE

WHAT IS IT?

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the family Arecaceae (palm family) and the only species of the genus Cocos. The term coconut can refer to the whole coconut palm or the seed, or the fruit which botanically is a drupe, not a nut.

EXPERIENCE

The distinct and tropical flavor of coconut has been a long time favorite among professional and home bakers. This creamy flavor has a subtle sweetness with undertones of butterscotch and caramel.

CULINARY GEOGRAPHY​

The origin of the plant is, after many decades, still the subject is up for debate. It has generally been accepted that the coconut originated in the Indian-Indonesia region and float-distributed itself around the world by riding ocean currents.

  • Used in coffee beverages
  • Flavoring agent
  • Used for baked goods

IMPROVISATIONAL ‘RIFFS’

  • Add a few drops to whipped cream for tropical lift without heaviness
  • Blend into cold brew concentrate with dark sugar
  • Stir into pancake batter with lime zest

THE BACKSTORY

Natural coconut extract can be a unique substitute to vanilla extract in baked goods. Used with the same purpose of enhancing a recipe with subtle sweetness and flavor, coconut pairs exceptionally well with baking spices and chocolate.
