Product Description

PURPOSE

WHAT IS IT?

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Oregano is closely related to the herb marjoram, sometimes being referred to as wild marjoram. This olive green powder is a wonderful addition to rubs and seasoning blends with its abundance of zippy and herbaceous flavors.

EXPERIENCE

A staple in Italian kitchens, this herb commonly finds it’s way onto tables of pizzerias and Italian restaurants. Technically a member of the mint family, oregano offers mintiness for peppery, and citrusy flavors hinting of thyme.

CULINARY GEOGRAPHY

Primarily used in Greek, Italian, Spanish and Mexican cuisine, the oregano plant grows best in moderate climates, and can quickly take over any available patch of land. However, when grown in colder climates the flavor is less robust.

TRADITIONAL USES

IMPROVISATIONAL ‘RIFFS’

  • Toast lightly in a dry pan → crush over grilled steak at finish
  • Warm olive oil + garlic + oregano → dip for crusty bread
  • Toss whole leaves into hot roasted potatoes right out of the oven
  • Scatter over blistered tomatoes with sea salt and lemon

THE BACKSTORY

The word oregano is actually a derivation from Greek words ‘Oros’ meaning mounting, and ‘Ganos’ meaning joy. Hence the word oregano translate to ‘the mountain of joy’. According to Greek mythology, oregano was created by goddess Aphrodite as a symbol of happiness. For this reason, the Greek believed using oregano in marriage ceremony would provide joy and usage of oregano in funerals would convey peace to the dead.
