TASTING NOTES
Taste is more than flavor. It is the full conversation between glass, nose, mouth, and memory. Here, we break each spirit into four parts:
AROMA
Sea salt, peat smoke, lemon peel, green apple, vanilla, honey, cracked pepper, brine, and coastal malt.
PALATE
Smoked citrus, salted honey, vanilla, apple, pear, black pepper, chili spice, maritime peat, and toasted oak.
FINISH
Long, hot, smoky, salty, and peppery, with lingering lemon, brine, vanilla, oak spice, and Talisker’s familiar chili-pepper snap.
TEXTURE
Oily, forceful, and full-bodied, with the high proof giving it grip, heat, and a proper storm-surge push.
Talisker 11-Year-Old Special Release 2022 delivers a bold island profile built around smoke, sea salt, black pepper, lemon peel, apple, vanilla, honey, brine, and toasted oak. It is brighter and more bourbon-cask-driven than some darker Talisker variants, but still unmistakably coastal, peppery, and smoky.
STRAIGHT TALK
This is young Talisker with the amplifier up. The first-fill bourbon casks bring vanilla, citrus, honey, and oak polish, but the distillery character does not disappear. Salt still snaps. Pepper still bites. Smoke still rolls in from the sea.
The caution is heat. At 55.1% ABV, this is not the smooth, settled Talisker of the older prestige bottles. It has elbows. It has weather. It has a little youthful burn. That is part of the bottle’s personality, but it also keeps it from feeling fully refined.
THE MIX
Coastal Highball direction:
Cold mineral fizz, lemon peel, and enough dilution to let the salt, citrus, and smoke breathe.
Smoky Old Fashioned direction:
Minimal sweetness, orange peel, bitters, and the whisky’s pepper and brine kept in front.
Penicillin-style direction:
Honey, ginger, lemon, and Talisker smoke, with the sweetness kept tight.
Rob Roy direction:
A darker vermouth profile, bitters, and the whisky’s smoke, salt, vanilla, and pepper forming the spine.

A DISTILLER’S TALE
Talisker was founded in 1830 at Carbost on the Isle of Skye, and it remains one of Scotch whisky’s great place-driven distilleries. The house style is maritime to the bone: sea salt, smoke, black pepper, brine, and coastal malt.
The 2022 Special Release took that identity and pushed it through first-fill ex-bourbon casks, giving the whisky more vanilla, citrus, and honeyed brightness than some of the darker sherry- or port-influenced Talisker releases. The sea-monster label may be theatrical, but the liquid stays on-brand: Skye, smoke, salt, and bite.
MY TAKE
Talisker 11-Year-Old Special Release 2022 is loud, coastal, peppery, and alive. Lemon, vanilla, honey, smoke, sea salt, apple, brine, and black pepper all show clearly. It is not as balanced as Talisker 10 or as elegant as the older bottles, but it has energy and a strong cask identity. This is young Talisker with salt in its beard and fire in its boots.
