PURPOSE

WHAT IS IT?

Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant (Curcuma longa) of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. Turmeric is on top of the list as one of the most frequently mentioned herbs in medicine and culinary application. Other than medicinal uses in ancient Vedic culture, the first uses of turmeric were for flavoring food, and coloring fabrics or cosmetics.

EXPERIENCE

As a member of the ginger family it possesses a distinct ginger note that’s often described as woody, musky, and floral. The naturally occurring compound curcumin also lends a flavor inbetween horse radish, garden herbs, and mustard.

CULINARY GEOGRAPHY​

Turmeric is native to the monsoon forests of south east Asia. The plant is a member of the ginger family and happens to be one of the most highly prized spices in the world, despite being incredibly abundant to produce.

TRADITIONAL USES

  • Curries
  • Natural color dye for food
  • Natural color dye for fabrics and textiles
  • Used extensively in Ayurveda medicine

IMPROVISATIONAL ‘RIFFS’

  • Toss with onions first → build a base before adding anything else
  • Mix into scrambled eggs with a touch of butter
  • Stir into chickpea batter → pan-fry for quick fritters

THE BACKSTORY

Turmeric root contains the active ingredient curcumin, which is an antioxidant that demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties in conditions such as arthritis, muscle sprains and other injuries. In addition, turmeric may relieve the symptoms irritable bowel syndrome, and food allergies.
